90th Birthday – Hog Roast Gwithian

You’ll probably know already that the art of hog roasting is not a new invention, and has been around for hundreds of years (and probably even longer). It’s a wonderful way of cooking pig, and the distinctive tastes and smells that you get when using a hog roast machine are highly attractive to people from all walks of life these days, both young and old. Over the weekend, we did the catering for a young-at-heart customer who had guests of all ages, and from the 3-year old great-great-grandaughter to the 90-year old host, it was obvious to us that they all adored the spectacle of the hog roast Gwithian as well as the fabulous flavours and aromas it created.

On this chilly autumn day, Ben asked us to help to treat his family to slow-roasted pigs in buns, which he’d recently decided were now his favourite food of all time. While we can provide lots of other options for your party or event, including our popular winter warmer menu now that the weather is decidedly cooler, Ben knew exactly what he wanted when he booked us for his special birthday party. I could cater this occasion alone, as it was a fairly intimate gathering, so I arrived at the family home last week armed with a small hog to roast for a few, short hours, as well as fresh bread rolls, homemade stuffing and apple sauce and a variety of condiments.

After preparing the meat and turning the machine on, I made sure to give the little beast constant attention as it slowly but surely roasted away. As the machine does most of the work, this gave me time to have several fascinating conversations with Ben about topics such as how incredibly different the world was 80-odd years ago!

Once the family members began to arrive, it was near service time, and when I did the final checks, the hog had a perfectly golden skin and really tender and moist meat, which just fell off the bone when I carved it. The crackling was the best I’d ever produced and Ben agreed and said that it was definitely his favourite part of his delicious 90th birthday meal. What a wonderful hog roast Gwithian!
